I'm a member of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD) and I'm always excited when a fellow member is quoted in an article. Lynne Johnson is our current president and the NY Times talked with her as they were working on a great article A Clutter Too Deep for Mere Bins and Shelves. The article covers number of reasons that individuals struggle with organization.
It also covers a topic I'd like to cover here for a minute. Some think that purchasing containers and bins will solve their problems. Unfortunately, it will often just create more clutter! We have had many clients that have rooms full of containers that have not been used.
I know someone that loves little drawers. Every time she sees a container with little drawers she almost salivates. She used to buy the container and then figure out how to use it. Fortunately, she does not do that anymore. There are only so many small drawers that one house can use.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love office supply stores and container stores. However, only buy containers when you KNOW how you are going to use them. Decide what you need in terms of use and size, then make sure you don't already have something with those specifics. If you don't, then it is good to go get it.
Tell me what you think of the article! Comment below the full blog entry in the comments section.
