Now is a great time to get ready for tax day. Eliminate the stress of running your calculations up to the wire by collecting what you need now. The list below are the things you should make sure you have handy.
Here is what H&R Block suggests you have with you:
- Social Security Numbers & Birthdays of everyone included on your return (you, spouse, children, parents, etc.)
- Last year's return
- Amount paid for preparing the return last year
- Amount of state and local income tax paid in the tax year
- All the forms that either say W-2, 1098, 1099 or K-1
- Records of other income records for work you performed that is not recorded on the above forms
- Purchase date and total investment in any stocks or property you sold
- Expenses related to your investments
- Records of any contribuions you made to IRAs or other retirement plans
- Records for mortgage interest, real estate and personal property tax
- Amounts donated to houses of worship, schools and other charitable organizations
- Records of non-cash charitable donations
- Number of miles driven for charitable or medial purposes
- Amounts paid for health care insurance and to doctors, dentists, hospitals, etc.
- Records to support childcare ad higher education costs
- Employment-related expenses (dues, travel, publications, tools, uniform cost and cleaning, etc.)
- Job search expenses and unemloyment income (if applicable)
