Have you heard of David Allen's book called "Getting Things Done?" His approach has always made a lot of sense to me and how I can focus. If you have not read his book, I encourage you to read or listen to it. There is an amazing phenomenon of "GTD" where communities of people work to put his thoughts into play. |
Keep reading to learn some of his great points and to see a video of him talking to Google! It is worth the watch!
Here are some key points from his work:
- Too much structure is too much - Organizing for the sake of organizing is not effective. Systems that work for the way you work that help you GET STUFF DONE should really be the focus.
- You must trust your system - If you don't trust your system you will not use it. If you don't use it then you have many thoughts running through your mind and cannot focus on what you want to get done.
- Forgive yourself and move forward - It is easy to "fall off the wagon" (we all do!) and it is just as easy to get back on. Don't beat yourself up! Recognize that you are not focused where you want to and change!
- Gather all of your commitments in "Next Action" focus - Know the full volume of commitments (to-dos - next actions) that you have and by type of action -- call, pay, write, etc.
- Understand the importance level - What is the priority of this activity? All things are not created equal!
These are just a very few of the ideas in his book and speaking. Hearing from the "horse's mouth" is always better than listening/reading someone paraphrase. So, take a look at David talking to Google. It is well worth the time.
So, what did you think? What was your favorite point of his presentation? What have you tried? What do you want to try? Comment on the blog and let me know!
