We're at it again! We have upped our goal this year. Calahan Solutions consultants and coaches are going to help everyone they can to get their offices and homes cleared out to make room for great things to come in 2008. Calahan Solutions consultants have a goal of helping our clients de-clutter and loose a ton of weight in 2008!
Many of our clients struggle with de-cluttering and many of our readers do too! Often organizing efforts are difficult because people get stuck at step one – getting rid of things that no longer have meaning in their life. Here are some ideas on how to get you started off right!
When you look at the things in your space, do they hold meaning and purpose to you? We often keep things that remind us of who we once were. However, keeping all of those things just clogs up our space and does not allow room for new experiences. Now, don't get me wrong, I really like keeping memories too. I just do it in a way that helps me save room. Here are some ideas for that:
- Scan it! Do you have papers in your office that are from notes that you took years ago? How about that picture your daughter drew for you when she was 3-years-old? These are great items to scan. When you scan them, you have the ability to access the stuff later, but you don't have to keep your files packed with stuff that you no longer value on a daily basis.
- Take a Picture Do you have something that you really (deep down) don't want any more, but you can't seem to let it go? Try taking a picture! This works for all kinds of items. You have a smaller version of what ever it is and you can get rid of the item that it taking up a lot of space!
How do you decide? Well, there are a number of questions you can ask yourself. Here are just a few to try on and see if they work for your style.
- Does this reflect who I am today?
Do you still have those "MC Hammer pants?" How about that suit that has not been in style since the early 70s? True - the seventies came back, but they are gone again for a second time! Do you really want to wait another 3 decades for it to come back in style again? Point is, hold on to things that reflect the person you are today, not the person you once were. Heck, you might even make room for the person you will be in the future. - But I spent so much money on it!
Have you said that one? I know that in the past I have. Was it really a good purchase if you don't use it? Donate or resell so that you can get some good out of the item. - It was a gift from Auntie Jackie (or any other person)
Do you keep something that you think is hideous just because it was a gift? The joy is in the giving. No one would want you to keep something that you don't like.
